Creative Creature Collage: Color and Contrast

Instructors: Janet Johnson and Susan Werner

Learn the fundamentals of collage through creating a fun “painting” of an imaginary creature with collage papers. You will learn the basics of collage such as choosing paper; preparing supports; and how to use the fundamentals of color and contrast to create a fun and interesting piece. Let your inner child out to explore and learn in this workshop perfect for those interested in learning collage.

Maximum Number of Participants:  12
Cost: $10 collected at the beginning of class
Supplies provided by SRAL:

• Two 6” x 6” boards/supports per participant
• Matte and gloss medium
• Flat brush to apply medium
• Small brown scraper
• Small paper plates for palette
• 3 sheets of copy paper per participant
• Collage papers in various colors
• Embellishments

Students to provide:

• Ruler
• Water container
• Paper towels
• Medium tip black sharpie
• Pencil
• Scissors: 1 regular and 1 small manicure type of scissor will work well
• Apron or clothing protector
• Optional: box type cutter with small cutting mat

Janet Johnson is a lifelong learner who shares her love of art with the SRAL Collage Mixed Media and Acrylic Special Interest Group which she co-chairs with Susan Werner. Her practice includes oil cold wax, watercolor, collage and pastels. One of her teachers at university level was Wayne Tiebaud and more recently Tonja Sell, David Simons, Roberta Rogers and Leslie Miller. Mainly an abstract painter, she includes various mediums including collage in her paintings.

Susan Werner has been a lifelong explorer of art for over 40 years. Her preferred medium is acrylic, but she has also studied and used oils, pastel, colored pencils, and watercolors in-depth. Mixed media is her playground to discover new expressive techniques. Her art often draws inspiration from landscapes and still life, but any subject is fair game. She is the co-chair of the Collage Mixed Media and Acrylic Painting Special Interest Group with Janet Johnson at SRAL.
