MINI-WORKSHOPS

Mini Workshops are formal classes. They are usually two-to-four-hour sessions in which an experienced instructor or artist (a SRAL member or a community artist) teaches a medium, technique, or other useful information for SRAL members. They are free but have a limited number of attendees. Therefore, members must register to attend. In the past, we have had mini workshops on how to critique one’s artwork, Gelli printing, color, etc. If you have questions regarding any Mini Workshop or if you need to cancel a registration, contact Susan Ettl, Mini Workshop Chairperson, at SusanE@SantaRitaArt.org.

Watercolor Weaving

Adventures in Rhythm on Paper

Instructor: Judy Brandt

Nancy Maas, nmaas.com, is the originator of this innovative and adventurous process I ran across some time ago. She says it began with the excitement of just-burst Trillium and a desire to paint them with watercolor, but the result looked flat, so she cut the painting up!

The idea of this technique is to coax a happy mess of scraps and strips into paper weavings that have more rhythm and movement than original paintings. The strips of textures and color are all part of the puzzle. A wild challenge…are you up to it?

Using their own reference material, workshop participants will incorporate the following design elements: direction, color, texture, size and shape into a rhythmic pattern. A quick value sketch is produced into which a focal point and strong dark colors are stressed. Two similar paintings are then completed, dried and cut, one vertically and one horizontally. The painted puzzle pieces now cut into strips, are woven, pieced and pulled into place and pasted together allowing the mat board colors to pop through.

This could add something new and refreshing for those who enjoy watercolor paintings, or it may be a
new departure for some to pursue further. A new direction, perhaps. In any event, it is sure to be FUN!
