Twelve Watercolor Techniques

Instructor: Darilyn Ronn

When you first get watercolor paint, it comes in many forms. Liquid in tubes, semi-moist (or bricks) in pans, and rarely but also in powder form. Because of the liquid nature of watercolor, the paint will flow to wherever there is moisture. Watercolor is a great medium that encourages creativity. Reserving white areas and lifting off paint are unique to watercolor painting.

In this class we will learn how to do 12 techniques that can be used when painting with watercolor. The techniques we will learn are washes, wet on wet, wet on dry, lifting paint, using watercolor pencils, layering, masking, sgraffito, applying salt, manipulating plastic wrap, splattering, and employing wax resist. This is not a complete list of techniques, but it is a great starting point to learn this medium.

After completing the class drills, you will try to incorporate at least three of the techniques you learned into a painting.
