Critique Conversations
Instructor: Fran Sutherland
Let’s get together to have conversations and critique artwork! This is a workshop to learn about critiquing and participate in a group critique with others. In order to critique artwork, one has to understand the subject/idea of the painting in addition to how the elements of design and principles of composition have been utilized. Second, one must consider if the media appropriately expresses the message. Fran will discuss how these concepts relate to famous artwork and your own.

Biography
Fran is an award-winning painter and teacher who shares her time between the Hudson Valley of New York and the Santa Rita Mountains of Arizona. During her career she has taught students from elementary through college level within the New York State school system.
She was a scholarship student at the New York Phoenix School of Design and later received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from the State University of New York, College at New Paltz. Presently, Fran is an active member of the Santa Rita Art League (AZ); the Community Performance and Art Center (AZ); Society in Kinston (NY); the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum (NY); the Barrett Art Center (NY); and Unison Art Center and Sculpture Garden (NY).
Her multi-media paintings reflect her studies and travels synthesizing both Eastern and Western cultural and artistic aesthetics. The chosen media help to express her ideas and are especially evident in textural compositions using oil and acrylic resist techniques. Many of her works resonate with an integration of geologic coloration and play of light on local and international sites and architectural structures. Recently, her semi-autobiographical artworks feature collage paintings on photo screen prints of bridges. She continues to be inspired by New York’s Hudson Valley and Arizona’s Santa Rita Mountains.
